Diagnosing and Treating Cleft Lip and Palate
The first thing you should do after your child is diagnosed with a cleft lip or cleft palate is meet with a craniofacial orthodontist. This needs to be something that you do very early on. You should aim to get your child in the orthodontist’s office before they turn one.
One of the benefits of getting in early, aside from our available cleft lip treatments is that we can show you how to care for your child’s mouth and teeth safely and properly. There are special considerations for oral health when your child has a cleft lip and/or palate.
We aim to perform surgical intervention for your child before they start to get teeth. We know that this can seem very scary, but we assure you that we successfully have treated many children. This is going to happen around 3 – 6 months old. This needs to happen in order for your child to develop orally.
