Who Needs Jaw Surgery?
Jaw surgery may be required for people who were born with jaw abnormalities. Depending on how severe your issue is, orthopedic care may not be a suitable treatment. There are several conditions in which we may operate on the jaw for. They include the following:
- Under-developed lower jaw
- Under-developed upper jaw
- Crossbite
- Overjet
- Open bite
- Gummy smile
- Weak jawline
These are primarily done for medical reasons. Sometimes jaw surgery is done for cosmetic purposes.
What is Recovery Like?
Recovery can take some time. You are encouraged to avoid foods that are difficult to chew for about 6 weeks. You probably will not want to bite into a chocolate bar or chew on a steak while you are recovering.
Soft foods are great for recovery. Apple sauce, yogurt, smoothies, etc. are all easy to eat and nutritious. You might be worried about getting in calories and protein, but there are many ways to get smoothies to fulfill your nutritional needs.
Is Jaw Surgery Dangerous?
