You didn’t go through months of braces just for the fun of it. You made a choice that took commitment. This commitment was rooted in the desire to feel better about your smile, your health, and yourself. Each appointment, each adjustment, and each small sacrifice was part of something bigger: building a smile you could be proud of. When the braces come off, it can feel like the finish line. But the truth is, your teeth are still adjusting. Without the right support, they may begin to revert to their old positions. That’s why wearing a retainer after braces is so important. It helps protect the progress you’ve made and ensures that all your effort leads to lasting results. Your smile deserves that kind of care.

Buffalo orthodontist Dr. Andrew J. Dusel discusses how long patients can expect to wear a retainer after braces have aligned their teeth.
The Importance of Wearing a Retainer After Braces
After we remove your braces, your teeth are not locked in place and will naturally begin to shift. That movement happens because the tissues that supported your teeth in their old positions, particularly the periodontal ligaments and surrounding bone, are still adjusting to the changes. During orthodontic treatment, the ligaments are stretched and the bone is reshaped to guide your teeth into alignment. Once the braces are removed, the ligaments remain loose and tend to pull the teeth back toward their original position. This is known as orthodontic relapse.
To make things more complex, your teeth are not set in solid, unmoving bone. They rest in a responsive system of bone and soft tissue that reacts to everyday pressure.
Retainers provide the support your teeth need while the surrounding structures stabilize. Without one, your smile is left vulnerable to slow, subtle changes. These changes eventually undo the progress you worked hard to achieve. Wearing a retainer is a crucial step in maintaining your smile’s alignment long after the braces are removed.
Wearing Your Retainer: What To Expect After Braces
As each patient finishes their time in braces, we provide clear, step-by-step instructions for wearing retainers. For teens and adolescents, we typically recommend wearing a full-time retainer for the first six to eight weeks following the removal of their braces. After that, they can gradually shift to wearing their retainers only at night.
Wisdom teeth usually begin to develop in the late teen years or early twenties. This often overlaps with the period right after braces are removed. If these teeth start to erupt and there isn’t enough space in the mouth, they can put pressure on the surrounding teeth. That pressure may lead to changes in tooth alignment.
We recommend wearing your retainer every night until we can determine whether your wisdom teeth will erupt normally, remain impacted, or need removal. Nightly wear helps keep your teeth stable during this uncertain period. Once we know that the wisdom teeth are no longer a factor, we can usually reduce retainer wear to just a few nights per week.
If your retainer no longer fits like it used to, please contact us. Teeth may have shifted slightly, and if caught early, we can often correct minor changes. If the retainer no longer fits at all, or if it has been a long time since you last wore it, you may need a new one to maintain the proper alignment of your teeth.
