What Causes an Overbite?

The three most common reasons why people would suffer from overbites include:

  • Small lower jaw
  • Teeth loss
  • Childhood habits

If your lower jaw is smaller than your upper jaw, it can cause a bad bite alignment. Overbites because of smaller lower jaws happen when the lower teeth continue to grow until they meet the top teeth, and they can have serious alignment issues.

Having teeth fall out can cause overbites in people. When your teeth fall out on the lower jaw, it can have a similar effect that having a naturally smaller lower jaw can have. Your bite and alignment can shift.

When kids suck their thumb, have a tongue thrust, or suck on their lip as a habit, it can lead to overbites. This might be why you are concerned about the dental health of your child. Using a pacifier for too long can also cause the teeth to create an overbite.

How Do We Fix an Overbite?

We offer treatment for overbites. If you are an adult seeking treatment, you might need to look into orthodontic surgery to fix your bite. For those with a naturally smaller lower jaw, surgery might be the answer.

Braces would be an option for a child with an overbite due to prolonged sucking of their thumb. If there is nothing wrong with the lower jaw, braces are a good option.

Further, if overbites are caused by having missing lower teeth, we can discuss giving you dental implants to fill out the gaps in your teeth that are affecting your bite.

Does My Child Need Treatment?

Trying to figure out whether your child needs orthodontic treatment on your own is possible. To truly determine if your child will need treatment, we encourage you to reach out to our office to set up a free consultation. We can assess your child’s teeth to give them a treatment plan in place for their bite.
