What is a Crossbite?

A crossbite is a condition when your teeth do not line up when you bite down. Many people suffer with crossbites. There are two types of crossbites that you could be diagnosed with. Posterior and anterior crossbites are the categories of crossbite diagnoses.

A posterior crossbite is a condition when the molars on your lower jaw protrude over the molars on your top jaw. Whereas an anterior crossbite is a condition where the teeth in the front of your lower jaw protrude over your top teeth.

You are likely to experience several uncomfortable symptoms with a crossbite, including clicking or popping of your jaw (referred to as TMJ), jaw pain, trouble moving your jaw, and more. You are likely eager to find a crossbite treatment that will give you relief.

Fortunately, our WNY orthodontists can help you fix your crossbite, relieve your symptoms, and allow you to live a life without this dental issue that has likely been a burden to you.

Options for a Crossbite Treatment

There are many ways we can treat a crossbite. The treatment that you receive will be dependent on the severity of your case, the type of crossbite that you have, and your age. Children can have their crossbite corrected, but it will likely be different that than the treatment for an adult.

For children who are getting their crossbites treated, their options while they are still very young could include headgear, braces, and palate expanders.

For adults, the treatment options also include things such as braces and palate expanders, but the difference is that jaw surgery is an option. It can be a more suitable option for those with severe crossbites.
