What is Tongue Thrusting?
The definition of tongue thrusting is in the name. This is a condition where the tongue pushes too far forward in the mouth and can cause an open bite. It might be because the child has allergies, has a tongue tie, or has poor swallowing habits.
When babies are bottle-fed, they often have a tongue thrust which is completely normal but as they get older it is supposed to go away. When children use a nipple bottle or a pacifier too long, they can develop an abnormal tongue thrust.
We can diagnose tongue thrusting in our office. You might already have a diagnosis from a pediatrician though as they often notice it during regular checkups. We will look at how your child swallows and how they talk to be able to figure out if they need treatment.
Treating a Tongue Thrust
We can place an orthodontic device called a tongue crib that gets placed in the roof of your child’s mouth. This device can correct your child’s open bite. If this is being caused by allergies, your child might need to see an allergist to help them. In some cases, your child could need swallowing therapy if that is why they are experiencing tongue thrusting.
