CBCT Digital X-Rays

Orthodontic Technology | Orthodontists in Buffalo, NY | Free ConsultationOne major change in orthodontics, and dentistry in general, over the past 15 years has been brought about by the advent of three-dimensional x-ray units. CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computerized Tomography, which has experienced significant growth in orthodontics and dentistry over the past several years. This orthodontic technology provides a three-dimensional view of how the bones are growing and where the teeth are positioned.

We’ve heard about it mainly through implant dentistry. If a patient needs an implant, the general dentist or specialist very often takes a CBCT. Now, we’re using it in orthodontics to gain a thorough understanding of three-dimensional growth and development.

We also use it to look at airways. One reason we’re interested in examining airways is that the way a patient breathes significantly influences the growth and development of their jaw, head, neck, and facial regions. When examining the airways, we can observe enlarged tonsils, enlarged adenoids, and any nasal structures that may be obstructing patients’ ability to breathe adequately through the nose. It enhances our ability to thoroughly diagnose a case, ensuring that we address all underlying issues and treat the patient efficiently.

Cone Beam Scanner

Another popular piece of orthodontic technology we utilize at our offices is a cone beam scanner, also known as a CBCT unit, which is also an X-ray unit. There are different manufacturers, and we have one from a manufacturer that has been around for a really long time. One important thing to know about ours is that we have the ability to perform a quick scan – a lower radiation scan that allows us to gather all the necessary information for orthodontics in just five seconds, which is roughly equivalent to the radiation dosage received from normal flat X-rays. It provides more of the required information, including three-dimensional views of patient airways, enabling us to ensure we don’t have enlarged tonsils or adenoids, or any other issues to be concerned about.

Another thing we can see is poorly positioned teeth that haven’t yet fully grown into the mouth. Very often, we see teeth that end up in poor positions. We want to know exactly where those teeth are in three dimensions because a two-dimensional X-ray doesn’t allow us to see them clearly, and we can’t plan as efficiently as we can with a 3-D X-ray.
