  • Elastics, or rubber bands, pit one arch against another. By making use of rubber bands, we try to change the relationships between the patient’s upper and lower teeth. If they are not worn appropriately, we may fail to achieve the desired corrections.
  • Additionally, inconsistent elastic wear will often lead to long-term soreness. Many patients who complain of chronic pain while wearing rubber bands actually indicate to the orthodontist that they are not wearing them consistently.
  • Elastics are critical to moving the teeth. I like to describe it by using this analogy. Braces are a nice car and the wires are the engine. However, the rubber bands are the gas to make it go.
