What we strive to do in our practice is enhance our communication skills with our patients. The initial meeting that we have with a patient, or with a patient and her or his parents, is a consultation appointment. During these consultation appointments, we determine whether a younger patient is on a path toward positive dental-facial development.
If we see patients who have malocclusion or are heading towards poor dental-facial development, we typically recommend maintaining orthodontic records. Once this type of record is created, an orthodontist will be able to both make a comprehensive diagnosis and discuss a more definitive approach to designing a treatment plan.
During our consultation appointments, we explain the treatment process. Orthodontic records are required if we want to discuss the diagnosis and treatment alternatives. This way, when a patient begins orthodontic treatment, he or she has a good understanding of what is wrong, why we are tackling this issue at this time, and what the objective of the treatment is. After this comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment planning, patients are able to make good decisions about whether they want to start their orthodontic treatment.
