- Temporomandibular disorder is a condition involving pain of the musculature that controls the joints in the jaw. Alternately, it could also be an internal problem within the joint capsule itself. Patients who experience these types of pains often become disabled. So it is particularly important for an orthodontist to recognize the likelihood of a patient developing these types of problems.
- When a patient who has been diagnosed with a temporomandibular dysfunction comes to us for orthodontic treatment, we are very careful in our approach. Starting too quickly may even exacerbate the problem or make it worse. Therefore, early diagnosis combined with an understanding of the condition – and why the problem exists – is critical.
- I tell my patients that I like to “wade into the water” on a TMD patient very gradually. Rather than jumping in, I’m walking my way in, dipping my toes in first. That way, I avoid the potential to make matters worse.
- Treating TMD requires frequent management and we strive to minimize the likelihood of having that patient develop pain. So if they have exhibited those problems in the past, we have to be very careful in our approach to treatment.
