The length of orthodontic treatment can vary depending on the nature of the problems. A full set of braces does not necessarily mean a patient is going to be in orthodontic treatment for a couple of years. We can put braces on, in some instances, for six months and straighten teeth. In some instances, though, the misalignment might take more than two years to treat. Only an individualized approach to diagnosis and treatment can really determine how much time that a patient is going to spend in braces.

One influential variable is the degree of difficulty of treatment. What type of skeletal relations are there? What type of dental relations are present? Cooperation is also an important factor in orthodontics. I always assume that patients are going to be cooperative, but both the orthodontist and the patient have their respective responsibilities if they are to meet the objective for the patient’s orthodontic work. No matter how hard we try, if a patient is not cooperative in treatment, it can be difficult to realize our goal.

With children in our practice, we tend to push. This can take longer, but stopping short of reaching a solid objective can negatively affect orthodontic progress. We try to work with the children and ensure that they are fulfilling all their responsibilities.
