Dr. Benjamin Hietanen joined Orthodontists Associates of Western New York, a practice recognized as a leader in early orthodontic and airway centric treatment, in 2024. Dr. Hietanen grew up in Hamburg, NY and attended Canisius University from where he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.
He attended State University of New York College at Buffalo where he obtained his Masters of Arts degree in Biology. He obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.
Following dental school he continued his education with a two year fellowship in General Practice Residency at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, NY. While at ECMC he had the opportunity to work in the oral oncology and oral and maxillofacial center, as well as participate as co-investigator in a clinical trial.
Dr. Hietanen then returned the State University of New York at Buffalo and completed orthodontic specialty training and Orthodontic Certificate and Masters of Science degree. While in orthodontic residency his research included evaluating the effects of maxillary transverse deficiency on nasal breathing and the orthodontic effects of skeletal expansion using micro-implants.
As a specialist in orthodontics he works to utilize cutting edge technology for providing excellence in diagnosis and treatment planning. He is committed to high-quality patient care and enhancing communication skills as he educates patients and the community about orthodontics.
As a part of Orthodontists Associates, he has adopted the strong belief in determining cause and effect and its influence on treatment efficiency and stability. Along with his mentors Drs. Colarusso, Steven Hietanen, and Dusel he has developed a passion for airway focused and protective approach to orthodontics. Dr. Hietanen has lectured locally on diagnosing maxillary transverse deficiency and its effects on orthodontic stability and patient’s airway.
Dr. Hietanen is an active member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontists, New York State Dental Association, Erie county Dental Society, 8th District Dental Society, and Greater Buffalo Association of Orthodontists. He is committed to continuing education and constant learning in order to bring the very best treatment to his patients.
