The most common problem that we treat is managing crowding. Many people have poor relations between the upper and the lower teeth that need to be treated. Most of the time, it is the teeth of the jaw as they relate to their upper counterparts that pose a problem in orthodontics. Addressing that issue requires working with children at younger ages. Any factor that would create a deficiency of the maxillary arch (the roof of the mouth), whether the factor is skeletal or dental in origin, can affect how the mandible (the jaw) relates to the maxilla in function. Many patients develop poor functional relations between their upper and lower teeth. It is important to create better skeletal and dental relations as a child transitions into permanent dentition.
Our office works to develop the maxillary arch to make it wide enough to accommodate the lower jaw. This is called orthopedic orthodontics: the development of better functional relations. If a child with a crooked leg continues to walk on that leg without any modification or intervention, the leg will remain crooked. If it is possible to change the way that the child functions by making her or him wear or sleep with a brace, that leg will grow differently and gradually become functional. Our office tries to do this with our young patients’ teeth; we try to correct the relations between upper and lower jaws by changing functional relations.
