  • Many times, orthodontic treatment for adults brings with it certain challenges. This is specifically because that patient is an adult. The first thing to recognize is that they are no longer growing. Due to the absence of growth, the amount teeth can be moved is limited. When we treat adult patients, we plan our treatment with this fact in mind.
  • Another factor that can influence an adult’s treatment is the relationship between vital bone structures and the roots of teeth. Because those structures can limit our ability to move the teeth, we often have to adapt our decisions based upon those structures.
  • In many adult cases, we take a CBCT x-ray (a volume x-ray of the entire head) because it allows us to visualize all of the patient’s structures. It also helps us identify potential problems before beginning treatment. This approach creates efficiency in estimating the patient’s tooth movement and allows us to make better decisions and propose a treatment plan that assures the patient of the best possible result.
