Causes of Overbites
There are three reasons why your child might have an overbite. Their lower jaw might be smaller than their upper jaw which would create a gap between the two jaws when they bite down. This is an issue of alignment with their bite. An issue that can eventually happen is when the bottom teeth will grow too much to be able to reach the upper jaw.
When a child loses teeth, it can affect their bite. This is particularly true with teeth that come out of the lower jaw. It can be similarly harmful to having a small lower jaw.
Another common cause of overbites is bad habits that kids develop. Prolonged use of a pacifier can be detrimental to their bite. If kids suck on their thumb, it can ruin their alignment. Also, if a child suffers from a tongue thrust, this can eventually create an overbite if it is not fixed.
Fixing an Overbite
There are treatment options for your child if they have an overbite. In some cases, jaw surgery might be necessary. This is often the course of action for those who are born with an underdeveloped lower jaw that causes their overbite.
If your child has an overbite because of bad habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrust, or using a pacifier for too long, we are likely going to explore the options of braces. Braces can restore the alignment of their teeth to rid them of their overbite.
