Are you concerned about your child’s smile? When your baby grows up and is definitively out of the toddler stage, the gaps in their teeth become less endearing and more worrisome. You may be afraid that their gapped teeth are not going away without getting braces.
To learn more, please keep reading and then give our office a call. We’d be glad to see your child and look at their teeth and come up with a plan.
Why Do Kids Have Gapped Teeth?
Gaps are most frequently caused by the fraenum which is the term for the bit of skin that attaches your gum and top lip together. When that piece of skin sits too close to the gum line, a gap between the two front teeth can happen.
Sometimes the gaps your child has in their teeth are just how the adult teeth naturally grew in. Sometimes these gaps close simply because the rest of their teeth came in to fill in the space.
Having missing teeth or too many teeth can cause gapping. Also, having teeth that are too small for the jaw or vice versa can cause there to be gaps in the teeth.
These issues can either resolve on their own or they can be fixed with braces and early orthodontics.
Are Braces Necessary to Fix Gapped Teeth?
The answer to this question will vary based on what your child is up against specifically. This is certainly not a one size fits all approach. We would need to determine, in the office, the cause of the gaps in their teeth and see if braces are the proper approach.
For some kids, if they are still losing teeth and getting new teeth regularly, braces might not be right for them in the present moment. They could need braces further down the line once all of their teeth come in.
Sometimes we know they will need braces before all of their teeth come in. It is a very personalized process that requires help from experienced hands to fix.
